How To Pick Glasses and Sunglasses That Fit Your Face Shape

Deciding on the right frame for your unique style and face shape is one of the hardest parts of choosing the right pair of sunglasses or optical frames.

Whilst there are certainly no fixed rules to what will work best for you the below guide is meant to help you make that difficult decision. If you want to skip to the good bit then click on your face shape from the list below to find the best frames for you from our collection.

WHAT SHAPE IS MY FACE?

Want to nail your online eyewear shopping? The first step you should take is to grab a tape measure and assess what face shape you have. Once you have taken your vital statistics you can find the style of vintage eyewear that will suit you best.

Before you start if you have long hair then pull it back into a ponytail so you can see your full face exposed. Also, get yourself in front of a mirror and trace the outline of your face when staring straight on with lipstick or eyeliner, guys just borrow one from your partner!

STEP 1: What is the widest part of your face?

  • Forehead - If you have a wider forehead you will most likely fall into the oval or heart-shaped category of face shapes. Especially if you find your face tapers in towards your chin.
  • Cheekbones - If you have a face where the widest part of your face is your cheeks then you have either a round or oval face shape. If your face is longer than it is wide then you are oval if it is similar in width and height then you have a more rounded face shape.
  • Jaw - If your jawline is the widest part of your face then you will fall into the square face shape category in most cases however don't forget to check out the shape of your jaw.

STEP 2: What shape is your jawline?

  • Round - If your jawline is tending to a rounder form then you should go to check out vintage frames that suit a round face shape.
  • Square - A strong jawline means a square face shape and those of us with angular chins can shop safe in the knowledge you have a square face shape.
  • Pointy - If you find that your chin is tending towards a point then you have a heart-shaped face as your face narrows toward the bottom.

STEP 3: How long is your face?

  • Short - As long as you don't have a particularly angular jaw then if you have a relatively short face you are likely to have a round face shape.
  • Long - Still unsure after taking the steps above and find that you have a long face? Then lucky you go ahead with frames that work with an oval face, basically any style!!

Now you have your face shape you can pick the right frame for you based upon our guides below...

HEART FACE SHAPE

For the heart-shaped faces amongst us, the styles that will work best will help accentuate the primary features of your face shape. Look out for frames that are wider at the top than the bottom such as wayfarer, clubmaster and cateye styles.

ROUND FACE SHAPE

For those with a rounded face shape where the widest part of the face is at the cheeks and features and curves of the face are less angular we suggest going for oversized frames in the wayfarer, cateye or square styles. Squares will look particularly strong as they create a juxtaposition to the less angular face shape.

OVAL FACE SHAPE

So if you are lucky enough to have been blessed with an oval face shape then we have great news for you, arguably you can get away with almost any style and they will look great on you!! So instead here are a few tips to make sure they look extra special. Aim for styles that will cover the face from eye to cheekbone, styles that are slightly oversized will look awesome on you.

SQUARE FACE SHAPE

If you have a more angular face often the best tip is to soften the face by going for styles such as panto, rounds, gatsby and classic aviators frames.

Square Face Shapes

Despite all the tips above about what will suit the shape of your face, we believe the most important factor in any sunglass or optical frame decision is how they make you feel when you put them on. If a pair of glasses makes you extra confident you will look great in them, also the beauty of fashion is that you don't always have to stick to conventions.

If you are unsure about whether to go ahead on a particular style feel free to contact us and we will try and arrange a fitting if you are local to us or alternatively provide any extra information needed about the frames.
